Woman burned in acid attack, three held

A 28-year-old woman has sustained burn injuries reportedly after two of her neighbours threw acid on her in Sadar upazila of Narail.

The incident took place in Bahirgaon village on Monday night over owing money.

The injured, Tania Begum, 28, is the wife of Masud Hasan, a resident of Shankar Pasha union in Jessore.

However, she lives at her father's home at Bahirgaon village in Sadar upazila of Narail.

In the case statement, the family sources said, Tania’s neighbour Jewel borrowed Tk15 lakh from her a year ago for doing business.

But, as Tania demanded the money, Jewel started threatening to kill her throwing acid.

Following the threat, Tania went to her husband's house on August 13 after lodging a general diary (GD) with Narail Sadar police station in this regard.

However, she came back as Jewel offered a village arbitration meeting to resolve the matter.

Later, Jewel and his associate Wahidur hurled acid on her at the night when she was going to her uncle's house to see the GD copy, the case statement said.

She sustained severe burn injuries on her back and other parts of the body during the acid attack.

She was taken to Narail Sadar Hospital where she was referred to Khulna Medical College Hospital following a deterioration of her health condition.

Narail Sadar police station SI Md Shafi Uddin said the accused went into hiding after the incident.

“A case was filed accusing seven people by the victim’s sister.  We have arrested three people and making drives to arrest the rest,” said Ilias Hossain, officer-in-charge of Narail police station.
