Another murder case filed against ex-OC Pradeep

A murder case has been filed against 28 people with Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Court, including the recently suspended OC of Teknaf police station, Pradeep Pradeep Kumar Das.

The case was filed on Tuesday afternoon by a woman called Gol Cheher whose son was reportedly shot dead by police.

Cox’s Bazar Senior Judicial Magistrate Cognizance Court-3 Judge Md Helal Uddin ordered the Criminal Investigation Department to submit a report after having the case investigated by an officer of the rank of assistant superintendent of police.

The plaintiff's lawyer, Advocate Insafur Rahman, said Gol Cheher’s two sons — Saddam Hussain and Jahed Hussain — were taken away by the police on the morning of July 4.

The lawyer said: “Police demanded a ransom of Tk10 lakh to release them. Their dead bodies would be delivered to them otherwise, warned Moshiur Rahman, Teknaf’s Huaikeng police outpost in-charge.

“Tk5 lakh was paid to them but instead of setting them free, Jahed was sent to court under a false complaint, and the police shot Saddam dead.

“The case was filed in this connection against 28 people; Moshiur Rahman was made accused number one, and Pradeep Kumar Das accused number two.”

The extrajudicial killings happening under the jurisdiction of Pradeep Kumar Das recently gained nationwide attention after Major (rtd) Sinha was shot dead at a police check-post on Marine Drive Road between Cox’s Bazar and Teknaf on the night of July 31.

On August 5, Sinha’s sister, Sharmin Shahriar Ferdous, filed a case with the Senior Judicial Magistrate Court of Teknaf against nine policemen, including Pradeep and Liakat.

On August 6, seven of the accused surrendered in court, which sent them to jail after scrapping their bail pleas.

Pradeep Kumar Das, Inspector Liakat Ali, and Nanda Dulal were taken into RAB custody for questioning around 10am on Tuesday.
