Refused by hospital, Gaibandha woman gives birth on street

A woman has given birth to her child on the streets after failing to get admitted to the Mother and Child Welfare Centre in Gaibandha.

After the hospital reportedly refused the pregnant woman emergency medical assistance on Tuesday night, she went on to have her baby girl on DB road in Gaibandha town.

Later, the mother and her child were admitted to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital with the help of police, reports Bangla Tribune.

According to the victim’s relatives, the woman in labour was rushed to the Mother and Child Welfare Centre when she started having contractions. Upon arrival, Selina Begum, an inspector at the clinic, told the pregnant woman to go elsewhere without any examination.

Despite repeated pleas, the woman was refused medical assistance and subsequently, the mother gave birth to her baby girl in an abandoned construction site on DB Road.

After that, the mother and her child were admitted to Gaibandha Sadar Hospital with the help of locals and police. The woman after she gave birth to her baby girl at an abandoned construction site on DB road in Gaibandha town CollectedHowever, denying all allegations, Selina Begum, the inspector at Mother and Child Welfare Centre in Gaibandha town, said as the pregnant woman was in critical condition and bled excessively, she was advised to be admitted to the Sadar Hospital.

Gaibandha Sadar Hospital Medical Officer Dr Aminul Islam said that both the mother and her child are now out of danger and are being treated under the supervision of a gynaecologist.

Meanwhile, while mother and child welfare centres are the only reliable place for mothers to give birth, a similar incident took place in April this year.

And now this recent incident has produced widespread criticism among the local community who now demand a proper investigation into the matter.
