Man beaten to death over oil theft allegation in Comilla

A day labourer was allegedly beaten to death after he was accused of stealing oil in Daudkandi upazila of Comilla.

The deceased was identified as Jakir Hossain, 55, of Zearkandi union under Titas upazila. Jakir used to live in a rented place with his family in Gouripur bazar under Daudkandi upazila and worked as a day labourer.

Informed, police recovered his body after the incident took place near Gouripur bazar at around 10:30pm on Monday.

Assistant Superintendent of Police (Daudkandi) Abu Salam Chowdhury said the victim’s body bore marks of blunt force injury. “Police will record a case once the victim’s family decides to file one.”

Panna Akter, the victim’s daughter-in-law, said Md Mizan, son of Zearkandi Union Parishad Chairman Ali Ashraf, called Jakir on an accusation of stealing oil and beat him senseless. “After we rescued him and took him to a private hospital, he was pronounced dead.”

On the matter, Zearkandi Union Parishad Chairman Ali Ashraf said: “I don’t know about any oil theft. I knew Jakir was a quiet man. He used to drive tractors, besides other day labourer jobs. I’ve heard that he died by overdosing on some pills.”
