Probe body formed over Netrakona haor trawler capsize, another body found

A four-member probe committee has been formed to investigate the trawler capsize  in Rajali Kanda haor under Madan upazila of Netrakona.

The district administration issued a notification in this regard on Thursday afternoon, a day after the capsize that claimed 18 lives.

According to the notification, Bulbul Ahmed, Upazila Nirbahi Officer of Netrokona, will lead the team.

Meanwhile, the district administration, upazila administration, police, and local public representatives have jointly decided to temporarily suspend tourist visits to the district and also advised locals to scale back water-related communications. 

Earlier in the day, a person who had remained missing since the tragic trawler capsize was recovered dead, taking the death toll to 18.

The body was found by locals, floating in a water body behind Rajalijkanda resident Yousuf Ahmed’s house on Thursday morning, sources said.

However, the deceased is yet to be identified, according to Sub-Inspector Nurul Amin of Madan police station.

A trawler carrying a group of 48 people, including madrasa teachers and students, sank in the water body amid inclement weather at around 12pm on Wednesday. 

The students and teachers of a madrasa at Konapara, Mymensingh, arrived at Uchitpur, Netrakona, to visit a tourist spot, hiring a boat to observe the scenic beauty of the haor.

But the boat sank in the hoar as it was hit by strong currents amid bad weather, turning their happy journey into a big tragedy.      

Seventeen people were recovered dead, 30 people were rescued alive, and one passenger remained missing on Wednesday.

The deceased were identified as Mahfuzur Rahman, 45, Shafiqur Rahman, 40, Isa Miya, 40, Ajaharul Islam, 38, Mahmud Miya, 12, Md Asif, 15, Md Samayan, 20, Rezaul Karim, 16, Mujahid Miya, 17, Md Hamidul, 35, Saiful Islam Ratan, 30, Md Jubayer, 22, Jahirul Islam, 35, Md Jahid, 20, Md Rakib, 20, Lubana Akter, 10, Julfa Aktar, 7.
