Miscreants hacked an Awami League leader to death in Tangail's Gopalpur upazila on Friday night.
The deceased Aminul Islam Talukdar Nixon, 48, was the general secretary of Hadia union unit Awami League in Gopalpur upazila. He was also an assistant professor of the Department of Social Science in Lion Nazrul Islam Degree College in Tangail.
According to police and local sources, Aminul was returning to his home in Dhanbari village after a meeting with his political party men in Ajgora village on the night of the incident.
Miscreants stopped Aminul's motorbike near the bridge on Ajgora canal and ambushed him with knives. Locals took him to the Madhupur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, said locals.
Madhupur Upazila Health and Family Planning Officer (UHFPO) Dr Rubina Islam said Aminul was already dead when he was brought to the upazila hospital.
Madhupur police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Tarek Kamal said the murder, taking place just a day before Eid, has created panic in Aminul's locality.
