4 policemen withdrawn as detainee dies in road accident

Four police members in Sundarganj, Gaibandha, including a sub-inspector, have been withdrawn from the police station following the death of a detainee in a road accident on Thursday night. “Sub-Inspector Razu Ahmed and Constables Shahanur Rahman, Mostafizur Rahman and Nargis Begum have been withdrawn due to negligence of duty,” Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police (Sadar) Khairul Islam told the Dhaka Tribune on Friday night. “A committee has been formed to look into the incident,” he added. Khairul said the deceased, 22-year-old college student Ripan Chandra Das, from Hatia village in Sundarganj, had been detained for abducting a Class IX student, from the same village, on May 25. Police arrested Ripan and rescued the girl from Bogra’s Kahalu upazila. On their way back to Sundarganj, the law enforcement members made a pit stop on the Dhaka-Rangpur highway as Ripan requested a bathroom break. “Ripon tried to escape and ran across the highway, that is when a speeding truck ran over him, killing him on the spot,” said the senior ASP. Learning about Ripan’s death, an agitated mob of Hatia residents vandalised the house of and a shop owned by the abducted girl’s family. Additional police were deployed in the village on Saturday to avert further attacks.
