A notice has been served to Rezwan Khan, chairman of Rafinagar Union Parishad (UP) of Sunamganj’s Derai upazila, asking him to return the money he allegedly embezzled in the name of implementing a project of Prime Minister’s special initiative Asrayan Prokalpa.
“Rezwan Khan, also chairman of the Asrayan Prokalpa in Rafinagar union, was served a notice on July 16 for returning the money, which he embezzled in the name of project implementation. If he fails to return the money within 90 days, a case will be filed against him,” Safi Ullah, Derai Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO), said on Sunday.
A new chairman will be appointed for the project afterwards, he said.
According to officials, 10 acres of government khas land on the northern bank of Piyain River near Banglabazar area of Rafinagar union was selected for rehabilitating 400 homeless families under the Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s Special Initiative Asrayan Prokalpa.
After acquiring the money trading 997 tons of government allocated wheat , the fund was supposed to be used to fill soil on the project site.
Some 125 tons of wheat was released on December 31 last year in the first phase while more 125 tons of wheat was released on January 9 in 2020 in this regard, the sources said.
However, On June 25, the project implementation officer Nazrul Islam inspected the area and found only 9% progress of the land filling project which should be about 25% as per the allocation.
As per the inspection report, Derai upazila administration asked Rezwan Khan to return Tk44 lakh to the government treasury within the next 90 days.
Local lawmaker Dr Jaya Sengupta said no irregularities will be tolerated concerning the Prime Minister’s Asrayan Prokalpa.
She said that she would talk to Sunamganj deputy commissioner (DC) for taking necessary measures against the persons involved in such irregularities.
