At least four suspected criminals were killed in reported gunfights with BGB, police and Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Cox's Bazar, Kushtia and Chittagong in the early hours of Saturday.
In Cox's Bazar, two suspected drug dealers from the Rohingya community have been killed in a reported gunfight with BGB in Chhurikhal area of Teknaf upazila.
The deceased were identified as Md Ferdous, 30, and Abdus Salam, 35, from H-block of Balukhali Rohingya Camp in Ukhiya upazila.
The gunfight took place around 3:30am, BGB said.
Lt Col Md Foysol Hasan Khan, commanding officer of Teknaf BGB battalion 2, said: "A BGB patrol team while on duty detected a few people swimming across to Bangladesh from Myanmar. When BGB challenged them, they opened fire. Realizing there was no other way, BGB fired back in self defence.
"Three BGB members were injured during the gunfight that lasted about four to five minutes. At one point the yaba dealers escaped and two of them were found with bullet wounds.
"After the duo were identified, they were rushed to the Teknaf Upazila Health Complex and then to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared them dead."
BGB recovered 210,000 pieces of yaba tablets, that has a market price of Tk6 crore and 30 lakh, a round of bullets, a locally made light gun (LG) and a sharp weapon (kirich) from the spot, the BGB officer furthered.
In Kushtia, a suspected drug dealer has been killed in a reported gunfight with the police in Dongmorka Centre intersection in Daulatpur upazila.
The deceased was identified as Kudrat Ali Mondal, 50, son of late Niayamat Ali Mondal of Munshiganj village along the border in the upazila. Kudrat had six cases filed against him under arms and narcotics acts.
The gunfight took place around 1am on Saturday, when police conducted a raid in the area being tipped off that yaba trade will take place, according to Daulatpur police station officer-in-charge(OC) SM Arifur Rahman.
"Realizing police presence, the drug dealers opened fire, prompting police to retaliate. At one stage the drug dealers escaped," said OC Arifur.
"Police took one injured (Kudrat) with bullet wounds to Daulatpur Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead. Later he was identified," the OC added.
OC Arifur claimed 3 policemen including an assistant sub-inspector were also injured in the gunfight and police recovered one foreign pistol, three rounds of bullets, a locally made sharp weapon (hashua) and 43 bottles of phensedyl from the spot.
In Chittagong, a man has been killed in a reported gunfight with the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Chittagong. The gunfight took place at Saral Union under Banshkhali upazila of Chittagong.
The deceased identified as Sher Ali, 35, was accused in 12 cases in total including murder and robbery, according to RAB. RAB recovered four sharp weapons, three firearms and 13 rounds of bullets from the spot.
Mahmudul Hasan Mamun, assistant director of RAB-7 (media) said the associates of the robber (Sher Ali) opened fire when a RAB team went to the spot to nab him. RAB members fired back triggering a gunfight. Later, the robber was found dead on the spot.
