Khulna turf war: 2 more die in KMCH

Two people who were shot in Thursday's turf war in Atra-Gilatala Eastern Gate area of Khulna city died at Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) early Friday.

The deceased were identified as Saiful Islam, 35 and Zihad, 50, of the area. Previously on Thursday, Nazrul Islam, 60, and Golam Rosul, 30, died on the spot when the clash took place.

Khanjahan Ali police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed the deaths.

On Thursday evening, police arrested a man with bullets from Mashiali village, that had started a dispute between two groups of local political influential people who had been trying to establish supremacy in the area.

Around 8:30pm on Thursday, one group launched an attack at Jafrin and Sheikh Jakaria, activists of Chhatra League and Awami League respectively, according to sources from police and locals.

Following the incident, supporters of Jafrin initially got into a brawl with their rival group and armed members in these groups opened fire that led to the death of four.

Apart from the four, six others sustained bullet wounds while Zihad was beaten by his rival. All the victims were taken to KMCH for treatment, confirmed OC Khanjahan.

Kanai Lal Sarkar, additional deputy commissioner of Khulna Metropolitan Police, said Jahangir, brother of Sheikh Jakaria has been arrested over his involvement in the murders and illegal possession of bullets. "Filing of a case is under procedure."
