Due to continuous rainfall, the water levels of all rivers including Jamuna, Dhaleshwari and Jhenai in Tangail have been rising, and they are flowing above danger levels as of Monday morning.
At least 141 villages along the river have been flooded. The floods have inundated 84,712 people and submerged 6,508 hectares of crop land.
According to the District Water Development Board, in the last 24 hours till Monday morning, the water level of Dhaleshwari River has risen by 11cm and flowing 44cm above danger level, the water level of Jamuna river increased by 20cm and flowing 3cm above the danger level, and the water level of Jhenai river has risen by 14cm flowing 5cm above danger level.
According to the District Relief And Rehabilitation Office, at least 141 villages in 25 unions under Tangail Sadar, Nagarpur, Delduar, Bhuapur, Kalihati and Gopalpur upazilas have been flooded in the district so far.
On the other hand, some parts of Elenga municipality of Kalihati upazila have been flooded.
As a result, 132,480 people have been affected, of which 84,712 people have been inundated. The number of waterlogged families is 21,178.
On the other hand, 601 houses have been completely washed away in the river and 1,299 houses have been partially washed away.
A school in Nagarpur has been washed away by the river and two religious institutions have been partially damaged.
In total 176 sq km of these six upazilas have been flooded.
Sources further added that both paved and unpaved roads have been damaged as well as three bridges being completely damaged and nine bridges have been partially damaged.
Till now, 400 tons of rice and Tk8 lakh in cash have been allocated for the district. Also, Tk2 lakh has been allocated for baby food, Tk2 lakh for cow feed and 4,000 packets of dry food have been allocated. Distribution activities of these are going on.
According to the District Agriculture Department, the number of crop lands facing waterlogging is increasing due to the new rise in water levels.
Till date, 6,508 hectares of cropland have been submerged in water. Of this, 2,730 hectares of sown aman, 95 hectares of planted aman (seedbed), 765 hectares of jute, 897 hectares of aus, 370 hectares of vegetables and 1,652 hectares of sesame have been submerged.
Rezaul Karim, deputy assistant engineer of the science branch of the Tangail Water Development Board, told the correspondent that the river water is rising again due to the rainfall and the water is thus flowing above danger level.
