CCC Mayor: No street hawkers in daytime from July 1

Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) Mayor AJM Nasir Uddin has said that hawkers will not be allowed to operate on footpaths during daytime in the port city from July 1. The decision was taken during a meeting held at the corporation’s office on Wednesday. As per the decision in the meeting, hawkers registered with the Department of Labour will be allowed to sell their goods on footpaths at designated locations in Chittagong from 5pm to midnight. Leaders of registered hawkers’ associations who were present at the meeting praised the decision. They also assured the CCC mayor that full cooperation would be provided in the implementation of the new policy. Regarding the restriction of hawkers during the daytime, Mayor Nasir Uddin said: “We have taken the decision to ensure that the city’s residents can commute safely and so vehicular travel is smooth. We have no plan to evict the hawkers as they are also the citizens of the city. The corporation takes the livelihoods of small traders into consideration gives them due importance.” “We urge the hawkers to comply with the decision. We will conduct mobile court drives if any hawker violates the new rule,” added the CCC mayor.
