Key accused in gang-rape case killed in Noakhali gunfight

The key accused in a case of gang-raping a person with disabilities, 20, was killed in a gunfight with police in Uttar Manikpur area in Senbug upazila of Noakhali in the early hours of Saturday. 

The deceased was identified as Akram Hossain, 25, hailing from Uttar Manikpur village under Arjuntala union of the same upazila.

Three policemen were injured in the incident and an LG gun, two rounds of ammunition, and a Chinese ax were recovered from the spot.

The injured policemen are Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Loken Mahajan, Constable Zia, and Constable Emran.

Senbug police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Abdul Baten Mridha said, upon receiving information, he along with other police officers went to arrest fugitive Akram Hossain, the key accused in the case of gang-raping a woman with disabilities in Senbug. 

When the police reached Uttar Manikpur village of Arjuntala union of the upazila, Akram and his accomplices opened fire on the police. When the police also fired back in self-defence, Akram Hossain's associates fled. 

Later, police rescued injured Akram Hossain from the spot and took him to Noakhali General Hospital, where the doctor on duty declared him dead.

He added that ASI Loken Mahajan, Constable Zia, and Constable Emran were injured at the time. 

The injured policemen are undergoing treatment at the Upazila Health Complex. The body of the deceased is currently in the morgue of Noakhali General Hospital.

On June 6, Akram Hossain along with 10 other miscreants abducted a person with disabilities from Arjuntala village and gang-raped her after taking her to a nearby graveyard.

On the night of June 11, the victim’s mother Hossain Ara Begum filed a gang rape case with the Senbug Police Station identifying 10 people.
