Child murder accused killed in ‘gunfight’ with police in Chittagong

An accused in a child murder case has been killed in a reported gunfight with the police in Chittagong.

The deceased, identified as Jashim Uddin Raju, 32, is accused in a total of 13 cases lodged with different police stations under Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP).

The gunfight took place at Jor Debar Par area under Doublemooring police station in the city early Wednesday.

Inspector Jahir Hossain, Officer-in-Charge (Investigation) of Doublemooring police station said that Raju slaughtered his three-year-old nephew over a family dispute on Tuesday evening.

Nilu Akhter, mother of the child, filed a case against her brother-in-law with Doublemooring police station.

Raju went into hiding following the murder, with the police in hot pursuit. Tipped off regarding his whereabouts, the police conducted a drive at Jor Debar Par area.

Sensing the presence of the police, the accused and his associates opened fire. The police also fired back, triggering a gunfight.

The police recovered a locally-made LG, a knife, cartridge shells, and 875 pieces of yaba tablets from the spot of the gunfight.

Bullet-hit, the accused was sent to Chittagong Medical College Hospital (CMCH) where the on-duty doctor pronounced him dead.

The body of the deceased has been sent to the CMCH for autopsy.    

The police also claimed that a total of five policemen including an Additional Deputy Commissioner and the OC of Doublemooring police station sustained injuries during the gunfight.

The police said the deceased was a listed terrorist, a professional mugger, and accused in multiple murder cases.
