One more held over alleged father-daughter suicide

A 30-year-old man was arrested on Friday over the alleged incitement of a man and his daughter to commit suicide in Shreepur upazila of Gazipur district last month. Gazipur Additional Superintendent of Police Golam Sabur told reporters that Borhan, the son of Nurul Islam from Karnapur village in Shreepur upazila, was detained at a relative’s house in Jhanaile area of Netrakona district. It follows the tragic deaths on April 29 of Hazrat Ali, 45, and his eight-year-old daughter, Ayesha Akhter, who apparently jumped in front of a moving train near Sreepur Railway Station after failing to get justice over repeated attempts to violate the minor girl. Hazrat’s wife, Halima Begum, had lodged a complaint with Sreepur police on January 15, accusing local strongman Faruk of trying to rape her daughter. Earlier this month Halima filed the case against seven people for provoking the duo to commit suicide. Friday morning’s arrest follows that of Shaheed, a 40-year-old close associate of Faruk who was picked up from his house by Sreepur police in Karnapur village on May 3. The police department has already formed two probe bodies to investigate the incident.
