DB police arrests family members of mastermind in Tangail money heist

Detective Branch (DB) of police arrested the father-in-law and the brother-in-law of a suspended Jubo League leader who was involved in shooting a postmaster and hijacking Tk50 lakh in Tangail's Kalihati upazila.

DB police previously arrested Monirul Islam Shojib, suspended relief affairs secretary of Kalihati upazila Jubo League, and Tanjidul Islam Jisan, a suspended member of the district’s Chhatra League unit. This, after the two shot the postmaster and hijacked the money on May 17.

Shojib's father-in-law Iman Ali, and brother-in-law Imran Najir, were also arrested on Wednesday from their house, where police discovered a sack with Tk17 lakh of the hijacked money.

Iman and Imran in their confessional statement before a Tangail court, said Shojib initially kept Tk30 lakh in their possession, and later took Tk13 lakh from that.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Rupam Kumar Das sent the two to jail after recording their statement.

On Monday, police arrested Ujjal Miya, 28, of Chhatihati village, Umar Gaji, 28, of Hashara village, and Humayan Kabir, 30, of Bolla village, all of Kalihati upazila, for their involvement in the hijacking incident.

The suspended Chhatra League man Jisan named Shojib as the mastermind of the money heist.

On May 17, Mujibur Rahman, postmaster of Bolla post office, collected Tk50 lakh from the Kalihati post office and was returning to Bolla on his motorcycle accompanied by Bolla post office runner Rafiqul Islam.

Around 2pm that day when Mujibur reached near Bolla Gorosthanpara Handloom Board area, another motorcycle with three people stopped them, said police sources quoting victims.

The miscreants shot Mujibur in the leg and snatched the bag with Tk50 lakh.

One of the bullets hit Mujibur in the leg and another missed him. He was initially taken to local hospitals and was later transferred to a Dhaka hospital for better treatment.
