Three people, including two members of the same family, were hacked to death during a clash between two rival groups over establishing dominance and previous enmities in Narail.
The incident took place in Gandab under Kashipur union of Lohagara upazila on Wednesday afternoon.
The deceased were identified as Aminur Rahman Molla, 52, his uncle Moktar Molla, 60, and Rafiqul Islam, 32, of Gandab village. At least 15 others were injured in the clash.
Lohagara police station Officer-in-charge (OC) Syed Ashiqur Rahman confirmed the matter.
According to police and local sources, Narail district council member Sultan Mahmud Biplob, and Kashipur union parishad member Miraj Molla, both residents of Gandab, had been at loggerheads for a long time over establishing dominance in the area.
On Wednesday afternoon, Khalid Hossain, a follower of Miraj Molla, was ambushed at the local market in Bottola.
When followers of Miraj Molla protested the incident, Biplob’s followers came down on of Miraj’s men with sharp and blunt weapons.
Subsequently, a clash broke out between the two groups during which Aminur Rahman Molla, Moktar Molla and Rafiqul Islam were critically injured.
When Moktar Mollah and Aminur Rahman Mollah were taken to Narail Sadar Hospital, the duty doctor declared them dead.
Meanwhile, Rafiqul Islam died on his way to the Jessore General Hospital.
The injured have been admitted to Lohagara Upazila Health Complex and Narail Sadar Hospital.
Lohagara police station OC Syed Ashiqur Rahman said they were conducting drives to arrest those involved in the incident.
Following the incident, neither Sultan Mahmud Biplob nor Miraj Molla or their followers could be reached for a comment regarding the incident.
