People from the Hindu community of Hamankardi village in Chandpur's Sadar upazila filed a case against a local influential, accusing him of illegally grabbing their crematorium land.
A case has been filed against Babrul Amin, a lawyer by profession, at Chandpur Model police station in connection with the incident on Sunday.
Liton Banik, one of the victims from the religious minority community, said: "Our neighbour advocate Babrul Amin hired a few muscle and illegally occupied 18 decimals of our land. He had cut some trees there and grabbed the area through barbed wire fencing on Saturday."
"We have been using the crematorium for 20 years and bought the land 35 years ago. We are living in great insecurity as they have threatened us to take our lives if we protest," added Liton.
Amar Shil, from the community said, one of them, Madhusudhan, had to be admitted into hospital as he fell sick in fear.
Ranjit Roy, a local Awami League leader, said such an incident will hamper communal harmony in the area. "It is an attempt to diminish the image of the government. We won't compromise against such injustice."
Ranjit is also the general secretary of the district unit Bangladesh Hindu Buddhist Christian Unity Council.
The accused, advocate Babrul Amin, said: "I have documents which prove that the disputed land belongs to my ancestors. But I have still fenced areas sparing the portion of the crematorium."
Chandpur Additional Superintendent of Police Jahed Parvez said police intervened as disputes occured between the two groups. "We have suggested that they [victims] go before a court as it's a matter of land dispute. We are also investigating the allegation."
