A suspected rohingya outlaw has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila, Cox’s Bazar.
The incident took place on a hillock adjacent to the Shalbagan Rohingya camp, in Nayapara of the upazila early morning around 4am on Sunday.
The deceased, Md Sharif, 26, was a resident of the camp and an active member of the infamous criminal gang named Jakir Group, police sources said.
The group is responsible for several robberies and criminal activities in the area, said the locals.
Police made a drive to the hillock, on information that the outlaws had formed a headquarter there to conduct their criminal activities surrounding the Shalbagan Camp No- 26’s block D-03 and D-04, said OC Pradip Kumar Das of Teknaf police station.
“Sensing our presence, the outlaws have opened fire at us initiating a gunfight and when we retaliated, they fled the spot. After the gunfight, we found the injured Rohingya man with a bullet wound, and recovered arms and ammunition from the spot,” said the OC.
“We took the critically injured Sharif to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead,” added the OC.
Two policemen, ASI Aziz and Amir Hossain, were also injured in the incident, police sources confirmed.
