A suspected drug peddler was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) in Tetuibari area in Kashimpur of Gazipur district on Monday morning.
The deceased is Nurul Haque, 25, son of Anzu Mian at Rajpalon village of Ukhia upazila in Cox’s Bazar district.
RAB sources said the gunfight took place around 3am when Nurul Haque and his cohorts were carrying 1.7 lakh pieces of Yaba from Cox's Bazar.
RAB 1 CPC 1 Squad Commander ASP Md Kamruzzaman told Dhaka Tribune the RAB men set up a checkpoint in the area on information that a large consignment of drugs is being smuggled in by a truck.
The RAB members signaled a truck to stop but its driver violated the signal and tried to speed up. When they chased them, the criminals opened fire at them.
“When the RAB officials retaliated, the drug dealers fled the scene and we found the injured man with bullet wounds,” he said.
He was rushed to Shaheed Tajuddin Ahmad Medical College and Hospital where doctors declared him dead.
1.7 lakh yaba pills, a firearm, and some bullets were recovered from the spot, he added.
A RAB man was injured in the incident.
