Death row convict Aslam Fakir, who escaped the gallows, thanks to presidential clemency almost six years ago, has been arrested in another murder case.
A Rapid Action Battalion (RAB-8) team arrested Aslam from a rented house in College para in Chougachha upazila of Jessore on Sunday morning, a correspondent reports from Faridpur.
Aslam is a resident of Manikdah village under Manikdah Union in Bhanga upazila of Faridpur.
He was the former chairman of Manikdah Union Parishad and general secretary of Sadarpur upazila Jubo League.
Debashis Karmakar, company commander of RAB-8 said that on April 22, Aslam was sued in a case filed for killing one Shaheed Sheikh in Lakshmipur village of Bhanga upazila.
"He was trying to flee to India across the border after the case was filed," added the official.
Earlier, on 25 September, 2013, Aslam and two others were awarded the death sentence by a Faridpur court in a case filed for killing Manikdah Union Parishad Chairman, AKM Saheb Ali Mridha.
The High Court also upheld the sentence.
Aslam was supposed to be hanged on 13 November, 2014. However, in a turn of events, his hanging was suspended just a day before the sentence was to be carried out.
On that day, he sought presidential clemency and his death penalty was commuted to 14 years of imprisonment.
On 25 August, 2017, Aslam was released from Gazipur High Security Prison and joined politics in Faridpur.
