A suspected criminal has been killed in what the Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has described as a ‘gunfight’ in Gazipur late on Friday.
Thirty-year-old Shamim Hossain alias Hasan was accused in at least 18 cases, including for murder, robbery, illegal firearms, drug dealing, RAB sources said.
The incident happened during a raid at Tongi’s Mazarbasti area, said Lt Commander Abdullah Al Mamun of the RAB-1.
“The raid was conducted on a tip-off that a group of drug dealers has gathered for a meeting. Sensing our presence, the criminals opened fire, forcing us to retaliate,” he said.
The bullet-hit body of Hasan was found at the scene after the gunfight, according to the RAB officer.
“He was taken to a local hospital, where the doctors declared him dead.”
Two pistols, as many magazines, eight rounds of bullets and 800 yaba pills were found at the scene of the shootout, according to the elite police unit.
A history-sheeter, Hasan ran criminal activities at Tongi and Dhaka’s Uttara and Banani, sources in the RAB said before adding he was named in 18 to 20 cases.
