Around 3,000 electric poles were damaged in the country's southwestern region due to cyclone Amphan, leaving many without power.
Of the 3000 poles, nine broke down completely. Power supply lines have been disconnected at about a1000 points, leaving thousands without electricity, said sources at the West Zone Power Distribution Company Limited (WZPDCL), and Khulna Palli Bidyut Samity.
Md Shafiq Uddin, managing director (MD) of WZPDCL, said 581 electric poles were broken and 1776 poles had tilted in 21 districts of Khulna and Barisal division.
Also, 490 kms of conductor wire got disconnected, while 114 supply transformers and 2306 pole fitting sets went out of order, and 966 insulators were damaged.
Repairs have been ongoing in the southwestern region since Thursday, added Managing Director Md Shafiq of WZPDCL.
Md Abu Hasan, executive director for WZPDCL said two transformers on the Kushtia grid were damaged, leaving Kushtia town without power. The maintenance work could not be completed until filing of this report.
Also, Kaliganj, Kotchandpur, and Moheshpur upazilas of Jhenaidah district, Alamdanga upazila in Chuadanga, and Kumarkhali of Kushtia, were without power till 10pm on Thursday, said the executive director.
He added that the authorities are trying to resume power supply in Kushtia town by delivering it from Faridpur, and Bheramara upazila in Kushtia.
