A 70-year-old man has died when a tree fell onto him in a storm as the extremely severe cyclone Amphan hits the Char Fashion upazila, in Bhola.
The deceased, Siddik Fakir, 70, was going towards the admin office to withdraw his old age allowance on a motorcycle when a storm broke out and a tree fell on him on the way, said Dakkhin Aicha police station OC Harunur Rashid.
“The locals took the old man to the upazila health complex where he died while undergoing treatment,” added the OC.
Meanwhile, in Patuakhali, a leader of a local Cyclone Preparedness Programme (CPP) went missing after a boat capsized in a canal in Kalapara upazila of Patuakhali Wednesday morning under the influence of super cyclone storm Amphan.
The deceased, Shah Alam, 40, is the leader of CPP No-07 unit of Dhankhali union under Kalapara upazila, said Asaduzzaman, assistant director of Kalapara CPP.
The boat carrying four CPP volunteers, including Shah Alam, sank in the Hafez Pedar canal around 8:30am after being hit by the storm, said Kolapara UNO Shahidul Haque.
Three volunteers managed to reach the shore but Alam remains missing till filing this report, said the UNO.
The incident happened while they were asking people -- using loudspeaker -- to go to cyclone shelters, said the official.
On information, a team of local fire service rushed to the spot and started rescue operation, he added.
