Cyclone Amphan triggers rain in Chittagong

Chittagong has been witnessing rainfall since Tuesday afternoon under the influence of cyclone Amphan.

The maritime ports of Chittagong and Cox’s Bazar were advised to keep hoisted danger signal number six.   

As a precaution, 284 medical teams and necessary medicines have been kept ready.

District Relief and Rehabilitation Officer Shojib Kumar Chakraborty told Dhaka Tribune that some 4046 shelters and 15,000 volunteers have been kept ready to combat the cyclone.

“A preparatory meeting was held with the representatives from all the concerned agencies. The meeting, chaired by the Chittagong deputy commissioner, decided to open a control room at Chittagong DC office. All-out preparation has been taken to combat the cyclonic storm. The respective upazila administrations have begun evacuating people from Tuesday morning,” said the official.   

To avert possible damage from the cyclonic storm, all vessels anchored at the jetties of the port have been sent to outer anchorage for safe harbor and all types loading and unloading activities from the vessels at the port have remained suspended.

Besides, all equipment for handling containers and goods have been moved to safer places and lighter vessels were sent upstream of the Karnaphuli River for safe anchoring.
