A man, accused in a double murder case, was killed in a reported gunfight with the police at Banshkhali upazila in Chittagong.
The gunfight took place around 2:30am near a brick kiln under Baharchhara Union of Banshkhali upazila on Saturday, claimed police.
The deceased was identified as Nurul Ansar, 40.
Police conducted a raid at Baharchhara area after being tipped-off that several armed miscreants took position there, said Banshkhali police station OC Rezaul Karim Majumder.
Detecting police presence, the miscreants opened fire, which prompted the police to fire back in self defence. At one stage, the miscreants retreated and Nurul’s bullet-hit body was found lying at the spot, OC Rezaul further said.
Nurul was taken to Banshkhali Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.
“The deceased was accused in eight cases lodged with Banshkhali police station. A total of eight policemen sustained injuries during the gunfight. A shotgun and some locally made sharp weapons were recovered from the spot,” the OC added.
According to police sources, two rival groups engaged in a fierce clash over establishing supremacy in the locality on Tuesday. Two men died after sustaining bullet injuries during the clash. Later, a case was filed accusing 24 people including Nurul.
