Drug dealer killed in Teknaf 'gunfight'

A suspected criminal and an alleged narcotics dealer has been killed in a gunfight with police in Teknaf upazila of Cox's Bazar early Saturday.

The deceased was identified as Ariful Islam, 25.

Ariful was killed in a “gunfight” in Moheshkhalia para of the Motshaghat area in Sadar union of Teknaf upazila around 4am on Saturday.

Teknaf police station OC Pradip Kumar Das told Dhaka Tribune that Ariful was a notorious criminal, accused in six cases, including of murder.

Acting on a tip-off, police conducted a drive at the area when Ariful and his gang opened fire detecting police presence, the police official said.

Police retaliated and at one stage, the terrorists were forced to retreat and flee the scene. Later, police found that Ariful was hit by a bullet, he added.

OC Pradip further said they took the injured Ariful to Teknaf Upazila Health Complex where the on-duty doctor declared him dead.

Three police officers-- Ramdhon Das and Saifuddin, both Assistant Sub-Inspectors and Constable Raman Das --were also injured in the incident, the OC added.
