Police have detained Shingdha Union Parishad Chairman Shah Mahbub Morshed Kanchan two days after the mysterious death of his domestic help in Barhatta upazila of Netrakona.
The deceased’s mother accused Mahbub Morshed Kanchan in a case with Mohonganj police station on Monday.
Mohonganj police station OC Md Abdul Ahad Khan said confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune.
He said: “The UP chairman was picked up from his residence on Monday night and was brought in to the station for questioning.”
According to police sources, body of the victim—a fourteen-year-old teenager—was recovered from the UP chairman’s house and was sent to Netrakona Modern Sadar Hospital for autopsy.
The chairman alleged that the girl committed suicide by hanging herself with a rope.
However, locals claim that Shingdha UP Chairman Mahbub had a tendency to misuse his political powers being the cultural affairs secretary of district unit Awami League.
During his time as the chairman, he has been accused of various allegations of corruption, which led to a suspension notice served to him by the Ministry of Local Government on November 19, 2019.
