A nine-month-old infant was allegedly hacked to death by his mother in Jotpara village of Shahjadpur upazila in Sirajganj over a marital dispute.
The accused mother, Mukta Khatun, 25, placed a scotch tape over the baby Mahmud Ullah’s mouth so that he could not scream and later hacked him to death on Tuesday night, police say.
According to the infant’s grandmother, Nasiton Khatun, Mukta married her son Mohammad Ali to Mukta around four years ago and they had been struggling with some marital disputes ever since.
“During the lock-down, the disputes got bigger as my son was home from his workplace. On Tuesday my son was going to Sylhet as a farmworker and when I went to see him off at the riverside, finding him alone, Mukta killed my grandson,” Nasiton said.
Shahjadpur Police OC Ataur Rahman said: “We recovered the infant’s body and arrested the mother, after being informed by the locals.
“Along with disputes, extra-marital affairs could have also induce the incident. We are investigating the matter,” he added.
