Police have seized 109 kilograms of rice, allocated as humanitarian aid for the flood-affected farmers of Islampur under Bijoynagar, Brahmanbaria, from being sold in the market on Thursday.
The rice sacks were seized during a drive led by Bijoynagar Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Md Ali Afroze on Thursday afternoon.
However, none were arrested in connection to this incident.
Confirming the news, the UNO told the Dhaka Tribune: “We were tipped off by a source that ward 7 member of Buddhanti union parishad Gaus Mia had taken the rice to Islampur market to a dealer's shop to sell it.”
By the time the drive team arrived the culprits ran away, leaving the rice sacks at the dealer's shop.
After recovering the rice, the UNO handed them over to Buddhanti union parishad chairman Jitu Mia.
“Legal steps will be taken soon,” said UNO Md Ali Afroze.
