A viral Facebook post on masked men attempting to enter a building by posing as health officials, only to be stopped by the building caretaker, has been dismissed as fake by Tangail police.
However, police have still urged the public to be cautious and to confirm the identities of anyone who wants to collect information or enter your building.
Tangail Superintendent of Police (SP) Sanjit Kumar Rai told Dhaka Tribune: “In our primary inquiry, we found that the incident in the Facebook post was fake. The caretaker was just bragging after his landlord had warned him about something like that [masked men posing as health officials] happening in Dhaka.
“The caretaker was gossiping with a friend and trying to be a hero, and the friend posted it on Facebook. He [the caretaker] works in a 10 story building with many families living there, but none of them knew of anything like that happening and the caretaker did not tell them about it either,” he added.
The SP further said they were still investigating the matter in order to be thorough.
Meanwhile, police headquarters has issued a press note asking the public to be cautious if anyone attempts to collect information or enter under the guise of emergency services or health department officials.
“If anyone wearing a mask attempts to collect information or enter your building by posing as emergency services or health department officials, call 999 to confirm whether they are legitimate,” the press note said.
