A mobile court has fined a union parishad (UP) member Tk10,000 for helping to hold a marriage ceremony in the dead of night on Thursday at Saturia upazila in Manikganj.
Ishaque Ali, UP member of ward number 6 under Baraid union of Saturia upazila, was fined on Friday for marrying off Babul Hossain, 36, of Manora village under Manikganj Sadar upazila to Mousumi Akter, 21, of Patilapara village under Baraid union of Saturia.
Saturia Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Ashraful Alam told Dhaka Tribune after being tipped-off of a wedding ceremony being held during the coronavirus crisis, he conducted a mobile court.
The UNO said he directed the bride and the bridegroom to home quarantine at the bridegroom’s house as many people gathered at their wedding party.
As of Friday, around five people have been diagnosed with Covid-19 in Manikganj alone.
In Bangladesh, around 1,838 have been infected with coronavirus. The deadly virus claimed 75 lives thus far while 58 patients recovered.
