Hefazat chief Shafi airlifted to a Dhaka hospital

Shah Ahmad Shafi, chief of radical Islamist group Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh, has been brought to a Dhaka hospital from Chittagong on Tuesday.

“Shafi was taken to Asgar Ali hospital by an air ambulance at 1:00pm,”Azizul Haque Islamabadi, central organizing secretary of Hefazat-e-Islam Bangladesh told Dhaka Tribune.  

Shafi was admitted to a private hospital in the port city On April 11, with nausea and vomiting and a loss of appetite.

The controversial preacher in his 90ies has been suffering from various old age complications including high blood pressure and diabetes.

Shah Ahmed Shafi is the rector of Al-Jamiatul Ahlia Darul Ulum Moinul Islam, also known as Hathazari Madrasa.

He is also the chairman of chairman of Befaqul Madarisil Arabia Bangladesh.
