Coronavirus: First patient identified in Tangail, lockdown enforced

Tangail has recorded its first patient who has tested positive for the new coronavirus (Covid-19) in Mirzapur upazila of Tangail on Tuesday night.

A 47-year-old man, returning from Narayanganj, is the first person to have had contracted coronavirus in the district, confirmed Tangail Civil Surgeon Dr Md Wahiduzzaman. 

He said: “The suspected patient’s sample was sent to Dhaka for testing on Monday. His results were conveyed over the phone Tuesday night. We shall have the test report in hand on Wednesday."

In this regard, Mirzapur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Abdul Malek said: “The man returned to Mirzapur upazila from Narayanganj on Sunday. He was taken to the Dhaka-Kuwait Friendship Hospital after he was positively diagnosed.”

Meanwhile, around 30 families were put under lockdown in his neighbourhood in the middle of the night, he added.

Earlier in the day, civil administration enforced a district-wide lockdown to contain the spread of coronavirus in Tangail.
