Chittagong super shop staffers sent to home-quarantine

The district administration has sent at least 14 staff members of a local supershop in Chittagong’s Kulshi area after the first case of novel coronavirus was confirmed in the port city.

Confirming the matter, Abdul Warish, deputy commissioner (Special Branch) of Chittagong Metropolitan Police (CMP) told the Dhaka Tribune that the staff members of the supershop were advised to go for self-quarantine.

As the son of the man--who tested positive for the deadly virus-- is a staff of the supershop and he used to deal with customers directly, his colleagues were sent to self-quarantine.

He came to the workplace on March 24 last, said the CMP DC.

Speaking to the Dhaka Tribune, Bijoy Basak, CMP deputy commissioner (North zone) said that the supershop ‘Basket’ will remain shut down until further notice.

Previously on Friday, a 67-year old man was tested positive for coronavirus making it the first confirmed case of the virus in Chittagong.

The patient's daughter and son-in-law recently returned from Saudi Arabia and have been residing with the man in his house in Dampara Road No 1 area of the port city under Chawkbazar police station, sources said.

Later, 40 families in six buildings in the area have been put in isolation, including 11 members of two families in the patient's building.

The infected man is now undergoing treatment in isolation at Chittagong General Hospital, said Chittagong Civil Surgeon Dr Fazle Rabbi.

“The condition of the coronavirus patient is improving,” added the medical professional.
