Rare Bengal Slow Loris rescued in Sunamganj

A Bengal slow loris (nycticebus bengalensis), a critically endangered species of primate locally known as Lajjaboti Banor, was rescued in Kamrabandha village of Tahirpur upazila, Sunamganj on Tuesday.

The animal was identified by Dr Reza Khan, principal wildlife specialist, Dubai Safari.

Zakir Hossain, a resident of Kamrabandha village said locals spotted the rare animal hanging by a bale (wood apple) tree, from which they rescued it.

Many people from other villages crowded the place to get a glimpse of the animal. 

Tahirpur Upazila Nirbahi Officer Bijen Banarjee said the animal will be handed over to the forest department.

The Bengal slow loris have been due to extensive deforestation, researchers and environmentalists said.
