Refused by 4 hospitals, schoolboy dies in Khulna

A schoolboy, suffering from liver cirrhosis, has died after four hospitals refused to admit him in the Khalishpur area of Khulna.

Rifat, a student of Khalishpur Obat Primary School and son of Md Kashem from Khalishpur Housing Bihari Camp 1, died on Tuesday.

Rifat’s grandfather Md Kalimuddin said: “Rifat’s health condition started deteriorating from around 2:30pm and he was rushed to Khulna Medical College Hospital (KMCH) where he was denied admission, as no doctors were present in the hospital. They just prescribed him some medicines.

“As his condition worsened, Rifat was taken to Khalishpur Clinic where he was again denied admission for the same reason. He was then transferred to Surgical Hospital and later to Moylapota Hospital, both of which refused to admit him.”

Rifat breathed his last in the evening, he added.

KMCH Assistant Director Dr Sheikh Atiar Rahman said: “Doctors are under pressure due to the coronavirus outbreak, however, the situation is not so bad that regular patients would not get treatment.

“I will personally look into this matter,” he added.

Khulna Civil Surgeon Dr Sujat Ahmed said: “Treatment for general patients has not been stopped at any hospital. However, we can see a lack of humanity in hospitals and clinics due to coronavirus.

“It was their responsibility to provide treatment to this patient.”
