A mobile court has fined a courier company for smuggling people from Dhaka to Rajshahi amid a countrywide travel ban issued by the government to stem the spread of new coronavirus (Covid-19).
The errant Ahmed Parcel Services smuggled at least 35 people in to the city on Wednesday.
A photo showing the passengers being offloaded made its way on the social media, catching attention of the district administration.
District administration’s Executive Magistrate Lashmi Chakma led a mobile court drive to investigate the matter and fined Ahmed Parcel Services with Tk1 lakh, after finding them guilty.
Additional District Magistrate Abu Aslam, present during the mobile court drive, said the courier service was fined for violating the government’s directive of prohibiting travel.
“Ahmed Parcel Services has directly disregarded an official order issued by the government to stop a potential countrywide spread of the novel coronavirus,” he added.
