Suspected robber killed in Kushtia ‘gunfight’

A suspected robber has been killed in a reported gunfight with police in Haripur union of Kushtia Sadar upazila early Wednesday.

The deceased identified as Parvez Khan, son of Yusuf Ali Khan of Aruapara Rajarhat in the district town, had nine cases—including robbery—filed against him in multiple police stations, say police.

Kushtia Model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Golam Mostafa said Parvez provided information about the cache of weapons they used for robberies after he was detained.

According to Parvez’s information, he was taken on a drive to Salda in Haripur union to recover the arms. Awaiting to ambush, Parvez’s associates opened fire on police soon after arrival, prompting a gunfight.

At one point, when the gang of robbers retreated, Parvez was found to be caught in the line of fire and had sustained bullet injuries.

Later, he was taken to Kushtia General Hospital where doctors declared him dead.

A foreign pistol, a magazine, three bullets, and a sharp weapon were recovered from the spot, the OC added.
