Domestic help arrested after CCTV footage reveals beating of 14-month-old

A domestic help has been arrested in a case filed over the beating and torture of a 14-month-old child in Purbo Mojompur area of Kushtia.

Police arrested Rekha Khatun after the child's father Rakiur Rahman, a doctor by profession, filed the case against her under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, said the district's Superintendent of Police (SP) SM Tanvir Arafat.

According to the case statement, as the victim's parents both are service holders, they would keep their 14-month-old child in Rekha's care at their home at Monami Crystal Palace in Kushtia town's Purbo Mojompur area.

But when they would return home from their workplaces, they would find some injury marks on the child's body every day. When the parents asked Rekha about them, she would reply that the child had got injured after being hit by furniture.

Suspecting Rekha of torturing the child, the parents installed closed-circuit television (CCTV) camera inside their house to know the actual reason for the injuries. One day, Rakiur wife Sharmin Akhtar witnessed from her office that Rekha was continuously beating their child and even tore off the baby’s hair.

On March 14, seeing the incident on CCTV camera, Sharmin rushed back to the house and caught Rekha red-handed.

Two days later, police arrested Rekha after the parents filed the case at Sadar police station.

Regarding the matter, Kushtia SP Tanvir Arafat said: "We saw the CCTV footage that clearly showed Rekha torturing the child inhumanly in the absence of his parents."

The accused is now in jail, he added.
