A suspected drug dealer, named Johrul Islam (40), has been killed in a ‘gunfight’ with the police in Jessore’s Chaugaccha upazila.
He is the son of Golam Hossain from the Andulia village in Chaugaccha upazila.
The incident took place early Sunday near the Ballavpur government primary school.
Rifat Khan Rajib, OC of Chaugaccha thana, told local reporters that the police were tipped off about a big drug operation around 3am on Sunday. Acting on the information, the police took position near the Ballavpur government primary school. At one point drug traffickers became aware of the presence of law enforcers, and launched an assault on them. The police retaliated in response.
Although most of the criminals managed to flee, Johrul was found lying dead when the shooting had ceased. His body was sent to the Jessore General Hospital morgue.
The police recovered a pistol and 100 bottles of Phensedyl from the spot.
According to the police, Johrul Islam has had at least 10 cases filed against him for drug trafficking in Jessore and Jhenaidah.
