2 suspected Rohingya robbers killed in Cox’s Bazar ‘gunfight’

Two suspected Rohingya robbers have been killed in a reported gunfight Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Shaplapur Marine Drive road in Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar district.

The incident occurred around early Thursday.

The deceased are Saiful Islam, 34, and Nur Kamal, 32, members of “Jokhi Robbers Gang”.

Tipped off, a team of RAB 15 conducted a drive in the area around 1am where a group of robbers were preparing to commit a robbery, said RAB 15 Teknaf Company Commander Shahed Mahtab.

Sensing danger, the robbers opened fire on the elite force, forcing them to fire back triggering a gunfight.

At one stage, Saiful and Nur sustained bullet injuries while the others managed to flee the scene, Shahed added.

Later, the duo was rushed to Teknaf Health Complex where on-duty doctors declared them dead. The bodies have been sent to Cox’s Bazar General Hospital for autopsy and a case has been filed with Teknaf police station.

Three RAB men -- Assistant Sub Inspector (ASI) Abu Kaisar, Sergeant Humayun and constable Khairul --were injured in the gunfight.

RAB also recovered a pistol, six round of bullets, eleven cartridges and one gun from the spot.
