The International Women’s Day-2020 was celebrated across the country on Sunday with a firm commitment to establish equal rights for women and their equal participation in the socio-political, economic and development activities.
In Khulna
The district administrations, Department of Women’s Affairs (DWA), different NGOs and educational institutions, human rights and women organizations and other bodies chalked out elaborates programs marking the day, reports our correspondent Hedait Hossain Molla.
The observance began with a colourful rally led by the KCC Mayor which was brought out from the newmarket area and ended at the meeting premises after parading different main streets in the city with the participation of women, men, girls, adolescents, students, officials and NGO activists followed by seminar, discussions, and cultural functions.
In Rajshahi
According to reports from our Rajshahi district correspondent Abdullah Al Dulal, various government and non-government organizations observed the day befittingly with the unanimous call for freeing the womenfolk from all sorts of violence, disparity and discrimination.
Marking the day, district administration and department of women affairs jointly organized a discussion session at the Human Resource Development Training Centre.
Advocate Adiba Anjum Mita, MP, and social worker Shaheen Akter Rainy addressed the meeting as chief and special guests respectively, with Deputy Director of the Department of Local Government Division Parvej Raihan in the chair.
In Rangpur
The district administration, Department of Women’s Affairs (DWA), Department of Social Services, Jatiya Mohila Sangstha, NGOs, educational institutions, human rights and women’s organizations celebrated the day through colourful programs.
Deputy Commissioner Md Asib Ahsan formally inaugurated the celebration by releasing balloons and pigeons from his office premises in the morning, said our Rangpur district correspondent Liakat Ali Badal.
Later, dozens of colourful rallies were brought out on the city streets by different organizations with the participation of thousands of women, men, girls, adolescents, students, officials and NGO activists followed by discussions and cultural functions.
In Gaibandha
To mark the day, Strengthening Women’s Ability for Productive New Opportunities (SWAPNO) in collaboration with local NGO Gana Unnayan Kendra (GUK) celebrated the day through elaborate programmes in Shaghata Upazila of the district.
A grand rally led by Upazila nirbahi officer (UNO) Mohiuddin Zahangir was brought out from his office and ended at the same venue after parading the main roads of the Upazila headquarters, said Tazul Islam Reza.
Later, a discussion meeting on the importance of the day was also held at the Upazila auditorium with Upazila women’s affairs officer Abu Sayeed Hossain in the chair.
UNO Mohiuddin Zahangir addressed the function as the chief guest and assistant commissioner (Land) M. Shakil Ahmed was a special guest.
District Manager of SWAPNO project Jahidul Haque, project coordinator-GUK Dulal Karim, and beneficiary Shaplan Khatun among others addressed the meeting,
The speakers said the country’s womenfolk had been showing their utmost efficiency with a reputation in every tier of the nation.
Meanwhile, men and women from Santal community, wearing traditional attire, take part in cultural programs in Gobindaganj upazila, marking the International Women's Day.
The day was also observed in other parts of the country including Thakurgaon, Naraynganj, Madaripur, Tangail, Naogaon, Shariatpur, Mymensingh, Gopalganj, Faridpur, Bhola, Panchagarh and Noakhali districts, report our correspondents.
