A female Chinese citizen working at Uttara EPZ in Nilphamari's Saidpur has been admitted to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital on suspicion of being infected with the new coronavirus (COVID-19).
Dr Narayan Chandra, spokesperson for the medical team of the hospital's coronavirus unit, confirmed the matter to Dhaka Tribune on Sunday.
He said the woman is being provided treatment.
Dr Chandra further said: "We have informed the authorities at Dhaka's Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) about the situation.”
"They will send a team of medical staff from Dhaka, who will examine her and take her medical samples back to the capital for tests."
He said no comments would be made until they have received the reports of her tests.
According to hospital sources, the Chinese woman returned to Bangladesh from China on Feb 4 and set to work at the Uttara Export Processing Zone (EPZ) right away.
For the last two days, she had been suffering from common cold and chest pains. As her condition deteriorated this morning, she was taken to the corona unit of RMCH for treatment.
At least 1,665 people in mainland China have died of the COVID-19 strain of coronavirus and over 68,000 people have now been infected.
Global concern remains high about the spread of the virus, which first emerged in China's central Hubei province in December, although the number of new cases from China's coronavirus epidemic dropped for a third consecutive day.
