Two people have been killed in separate reported gunfights in Chittagong and Cox's Bazar districts.
The incidents occurred early Sunday.
In Chittagong, a suspected pirate was killed in a reported gunfight with Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) at Banigram Lotmuni Pahar area of Banshkhali upazila around 12:30am.
The deceased Morshed Alam, 35, was accused in over two dozen cases including the killing of 31 fishermen in the Bay of Bengal.
Acting on a tip-off, A RAB patrol team conducted a drive in the area, RAB 7 Assistant Director (Media) Mahmudul Hasan Mamun told Dhaka Tribune.
A gang of pirates opened fire as soon as the elite force reached the spot, triggering a gunfight. Morshed was caught in the line of fire and died on the spot, Mamun added.
RAB recovered a large number of firearms and ammunition, including a foreign-made pistol, from the spot.
In Cox's Bazar, a suspected drug trader named Md Nasir alias Munna, 30, was killed in a reported gunfight with police near Naf river in Whykong union of Teknaf upazila around 4am.
Teknaf model police station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Pradip Kumar Das said a police team conducted an anti-drug drive there after acting on a tip-off that a large consignment of yaba will be dispatched in the area.
Upon realizing the presence of police, a gang of drug traders started shooting at them, forcing them to strike back and triggering a gunfight. Nasir and three police officials were caught in the line of fire and injured.
Police took the injured to Tekaf Sadar Hospital, where the three policemen - ASI Ahid Ullah, 40, Constable Abdul Shukkur, 23, and Md Helal - were provided primary treatment and released.
However, Nasir was shifted to Cox's Bazar Sadar Hospital, where the on-duty doctors declared him dead, the OC added.
Police also recovered 10,000 yaba pills, three firearms, 12 cartridges, and 16 bullet shells from the spot.
The OC further said: "A case has been filed in this regard."
