Police arrested two members of New JMB, an offshoot of the banned militant outfit Jama'atul Mujahideen Bangladesh, for alleged bombs attacks in 2019 on a Krishak League office and the Aranghata police outpost's motorcycle garage in Khulna.
The arrested are Nur Mohammad Anik, 24, from Ghior upazila in Manikganj, and Md Mojahidul Islam Rafi, 23, from Shibganj upazila in Bogra.
The two were brought before a Khulna court on Saturday where the Khulna Metropolitan Police (KMP) sought a 15 day remand while the court granted a 10 day remand for each.
Acting on a tipoff, a special KMP team arrested the two from the ground floor of a four story building on Gollamari road of Khulna city during a three hour long drive, early on Saturday.
Both of them are students of Khulna University and they confessed to their involvement in the bomb attacks during primary interrogation, confirmed KMP Additional Deputy Commissioner (ADC) Sheikh Moniruzzaman Mithu, at a media briefing on Saturday.
Large amounts of materials used for making explosives were recovered from their possession, ADC Moniruzzaman added.
KMP Commissioner Khandaker Lutful Kabir said: "The two arrested were inspired by radical ideologies and online propaganda on social media and started following the new JMB group. They taught themselves and became experts in making Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) and other bombs."
"They rented houses in different parts of the city to make remote controlled explosives and planned their attacks. One of them placed the bomb and the other detonated it from a distance using a remote control during both their attacks," Commissioner Kabir said.
Commissioner Kabir said they did not find the two arrested linked to any global terror group.
At least two persons were injured in the attack on the Krishak League office on September 23 last year, while a motorcycle was damaged in another bomb attack on a police garage on December 5 that year.
