Electrocution of animals: Legal notice served to BREB, Forest Department

A legal notice has been served on Bangladesh Forest Department and Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) seeking the removal of livewire from Santoshpur Reserve Forest in Phulbaria upazila of Mymensingh to protect animals, including monkeys, from electrocution.

Supreme Court lawyer Barrister Shihab Uddin Khan served the legal notice on Thursday on behalf of the People for Animal Welfare Foundation (PAW), an organization dedicated to the welfare of street animals, demanding the removal of the bare power lines from the forest area right away.

According to the notice, there is a total of 2863.14 acres of forest area in the Rangamatia and Nawgaw union of the Phulbaria upazila in Mymensingh where more than three hundred monkeys live.

Recently many of those monkeys got injured and were electrocuted because of the high voltage electric lines installed by Palli Bidyut Samity (PBS) under Bangladesh Rural Electrification Board (BREB) in the adjacent areas.

The notice also urged authorities concerned to ensure treatment and rehabilitation of the injured monkeys.
