A rare cat was rescued on Tuesday by the Wildlife Crime Control unit of the Forest Department, from Panchabati in Narayanganj Sadar upazila.
MM Saad of the unit said the animal entered the locality in search of food.
"The cat was injured when being captured. We will hand it over to the Forest Department proper after providing the treatment needed," he said.
"We previously recovered the skin of a cat of the same species in Dhaka's Shahbag area," added Saad.
District Livestock Services Officer Basona Akhter said: "The cat will be handed over to us if the Forest Department deems it necessary. Otherwise it will be freed."
The jungle cat, also called reed cat or swamp cat, is native to the Middle East, South and Southeast Asia, and Southern China. Its scientific name is Felis Chaus.
This medium-sized cat usually inhabits wetlands like swamps, and littoral and riparian areas with dense vegetation. However, they have become endangered in Bangladesh due to the reckless destruction of their habitat.
This species of cat is protected under schedule I of the Wildlife (Conservation and Security) Acts of 1974 and 2012.
