117th birthday of poet Jasimuddin observed

The 117th birth anniversary of Jasimuddin, the beloved poetof Bengal popularly known as Palli Kabi (Pastoral Poet), was observed in Faridpur on Wednesday.

Marking the day, Faridpur district administration and Jasim Foundation jointly chalked out various programs. This included placing of floral wreaths at the grave of the late poet, a discussion panel on the poet’s life and works, and a doa mahfil.

At 8am in the morning, Faridpur district administration, Jasim Foundation, Faridpur Shahitya & Sanskriti Unnayan Sangstha, Ansaruddin High School, and the district unit of Muktijoddha Sangsad, paid tribute to the poet with placing floral wreaths at the grave, under the poet's favourite pomegranate tree in his ancestral home.

Faridpur ADC (General) Begom Roksana Rahman chaired the discussion panel while DC Atul Sarker was the chief guest, and SP Md Alimuzzaman was the special guest at the program.

Among others, Prof Mosharraf Ali of Government Rajendra College, Deputy Director of Local Government Md Moniruzzaman, Additional Deputy Magistrate Md Aslam Molla, and ASP Md Jamal Pasha were also present at the program.

The poet was born in 1903 in his maternal uncle’s house in Tambulkhana village of Faridpur.

Jasimuddin’s ageless creation ‘Nakshi Kanthar Math’ has been translated into many different languages.

He is also the author of many remarkable works like Sojan Badiyar Ghat, Rangila Nayer Majhi, Matir Kanna, Suchayani ,Beder Meye, Pallibadhu, Thakur Badir Abinay , Dalim Kumar etc.

When he was still a university student, his poem ‘Kabar’ (Grave) was included in school textbooks.

He is a key figure in the revival of Bengali pastoral literature in the 20th century.

A versatile writer, Jasimuddin wrote many poems, ballads, songs, plays, novels, stories, memoirs, travelogues, and more.
