A joint drive conducted by the district forest department and coast guard has seized 40 maunds (1,600kg) of endangered dolphin and shark offspring in Bhola yesterday.
A mobile court led by Bhola Sadar Upazila Nirbahi Officer and Executive Magistrate Md Kamal Hossain, apprehended a smuggler Md Anis from Ilisha Ferry Ghat area and sentenced him to a year in prison.
Forest Department’s Range Officer (Sadar Range) Md Kamrul Islam said: “Acting on a tip-off, we conducted a drive and seized 40 maunds of baby dolphins and sharks, which are on the verge of extinction in Bangladesh.”
The seized fish were buried in the ground soon after.
